With version 2.0, we introduce a major upgrade of the Dependency Map user interface for Jira DataCenter. This article collects questions and answers on how to get started with the new version.

In this article and in general, we now refer to Dependency Map 1.x as legacy, e.g. a map created with an older version of Dependency Map will be referred to as a “legacy map”.

Why a new UI?

Dependency Map was first released for Jira Data Center (and Server) in 2019, followed by a Jira Cloud version in 2022. The Cloud version introduced a modern user interface based on Atlassian’s updated development platform.

Dependency Map 2.0 brings this modern interface to Data Center customers, enabling faster updates and improvements for all users – whether on DataCenter or Cloud. This includes the direct feedback during the configuration of a map – changes to the map configuration are directly rendered in the map.

How do I …?

There’s always the documentation on Dependency Map for Jira DataCenter, version 2, but below are some quick Q&A:

  • Open my legacy maps?
    • You will find all your legacy maps listed in the “Available maps” along new maps that you create with the new user interface. Click the map name to open the map.
    • To open a legacy map with the legacy user interface, click “Legacy Dependency Map” in the main Dependency Map menu. Locate the map using “My favorite maps” or search for it.
    • Direct bookmarks to legacy maps still works and will open the legacy map using the legacy user interface. To open it using the new user interface, you need to locate the map by searching for it in the “Available maps” (you can limit the search using the Favorite button, if the map is a legacy favorite).
  • Find my favorites?
    • Your existing favorites for legacy maps are visible in the “Available maps” page. Click the favorite button to only view maps that are favorites.
    • Click that favorite icon to toggle the favorite marking – applies to both legacy and new maps.
  • Migrate a legacy map?
    • Open the legacy map.
    • Expand the configuration pane on the right hand side.
    • Click “Save As…”, enter a new name and click Ok.
    • The legacy maps is now migrated and will appear on the “Available maps” page.

Limitations

Some of the features that are available in the legacy version of Dependency Map, are not yet available with the 2.0.0 release:

  1. The “in map filtering” of issue values (configured by clicking the “Filter” button in a map) is not yet supported.
  2. Customized sort order of issue values (configured by clicking the “Sort” button in a map) is available, but customized sort order in a legacy map is not migrated.
  3. The “Sections” layout – selecting only column or row results in a similar layout, but without the advanced grouping of issues.
  4. Export to SVG is no longer available, however, maps can be exported to PDF.
  5. Legacy maps cannot be deleted from the new user interface. To delete a legacy map, locate the map using the “Legacy Dependency Map” menu. E.g. search for the legacy map or locate it in the legacy “My favorites” list.

Limitations number 1 – 4 are planned follow-up releases.
